Parents

Parent Group

A group of parents, self named Childhood Asthma Parent Education Group (CAPE-G) was formed in 2004. They had a common interest, asthma. CARMA trained these as parent lay-educators so that they could educate other parents of asthmatic children. CAPE-G meetings are held on an as-needed basis.

Three members of CAPE-G were selected by Allergy and Asthma Network, Mothers of Asthmatics (AANMA), a national organization to participate in an exciting program. These three parents were trained as Outreach Service Coordinators (OSC). They are currently working with local schools and select families to educate and create awareness about asthma. CARMA is very proud of the OSC’s!

Education Classes

Asthma Education classes are offered by request to interested parents/guardians in the Richmond Metropolitan Area. Additionally, programs are available to parents of children enrolled in Head Start and parents of children attending licensed child care centers. These classes are coordinated by the center and the CARMA Outreach Coordinator. The classes provide valuable information and guidance to parents and caregivers of children with asthma. Other adult family members caring for children with asthma are welcome to attend.

The classes are approximately one hour in length and are held in the evenings and on Saturdays. Two classes may be necessary to cover the learning objectives. Upon completing the class, parents will understand the basics of asthma including: signs and symptoms of an asthma flare-up, different types of asthma medications, common triggers, and ways to help the asthmatic child enjoy a healthier lifestyle. If interested parents/guardians are not able to attend a scheduled class, CARMA has easy to understand resource material that is available by contacting the Outreach Coordinator at (804) 213-0918.

The goal of CARMA’s parent activities is to empower our parents with the knowledge that YOU’VE GOT THE POWER TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE in your child’s life.
